Message Turn the engine over by hand and see if anything jumps out at you while you do. You said it’s coming from the exhaust value cover, but mention VTC pulley replacement which is part of the intake cam.pop the intake valve cover and check that too.

Are you sure you know where the sound is coming from? Try stethescoping it while running at idle. I assume you can at least clearly hear it coming from one side of the engine over another.

If you didn’t rebuild lifters, I’d suggest doing so. It’s very easy and can help you eliminate that component from the list of suspects.

Last question, are your oil passages clean and clear so that adequate lubrication is reaching the lifters and cams? I only ask because I don’t know if this is a rebuild and what was done with engine.
